Enjoy the ‘Best of beer in Flanders’
Documents drawn up by local clergymen mention the existence of a farm-brewery in the picturesque area called "Pajottenland" back in 1604. At the end of the 17th century this brewery in Kobbegem (Flemish-Brabant) was run by Joris Van der Hasselt and subsequently by members of the related Keersmaeker family. The brewery business took off and in due time specialised in the production of Geuze beer under the name "Mort Subite". After all these years the brewery still lies amidst rolling hills, ploughed fields and lush green meadows. The gentle character of the area and the individuality of the village have stood the test of time. But not just them, though, as also the beer seems to have lost nothing of its authentic character. This brewery is one of the select few breweries that produce Geuze beer according to traditional methods. The process of spontaneous fermentation is unique because the air quality and climatic conditions of the Zenne valley and the “Pajottenland” are unequalled. "Mort Subite" is a product that fits in well with the philosophy of enjoying life to the full. Even the name reflects this fact. At the beginning of the 20th century Theophile Vossen ran an establishment in Brussels called "La Cour Royale". His pub was cosy and always full of life. People had fun there and played games of dice. The dice would be thrown into a hexagonal dice tray and the loser at this "pitjesbak" game was referred to as "de mort" (literally translated as "the dead one"). When it was time to go back to work, the players would finish the game with a last throw of the dice: the "Mort Subite" or "sudden death". In light of the game's popularity Vossen promptly decided to change the name of his establishment to "A la Mort Subite". The Lambic beer from Kobbegem he served in his pub was later given the same name.
