Enjoy the ‘Best of beer in Flanders’
A long brewing tradition links past and present. Back in the 14th century, when the first brewers' guilds were in the ascendant, Henricus De Block acquired his brewing rights on account of his fief, granted to him by the Duke of Brabant and Burgundy. It was Louis De Block, however, who was to start up the current brewery. He was a miller and farmer, married to a brewer's daughter from the small rural community of Baardegem. It was a time when old brewing traditions were passed on from one generation to the next. Paul Saerens, who married one of De Block's daughters, decided against changing the name of the brewery to his own. As a young man he witnessed the effects of globalisation and saw the numbers of borders around him decrease. He drew his conclusions and decided to cast his eye beyond Merchtem. Today, up to 80% of "Block beer" is exported abroad. Paul even launched a "Columbus beer" to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. The brewery also produces the triple beer "Abdijbier Dendermonde" and "Special 6", a blended beer made from both old and young beers. Paul also set up a brewery museum, spread over two reception rooms in the brewery. Visitors will be able to get an overview of the industrial archaeology of brewing life.
